Opening reception for artwork by Graham Parker and Joe Winter
Tue Dec 8, 6PM to 9PM

Please join us for a reception to mark the addition of two new artworks to the Marian Spore collection, both of which use light as a raw material.

For his series ‘Notes for a History of Light’, presented as a work in-progress, Joe Winter shines ordinary lamps on colored paper over long periods of time, resulting in delicate abstract compositions as the pigment deteriorates over time. Graham Parker’s ‘Kid Weil’ consists of a neon sign hanging above a reflecting puddle. The text of the sign is appropriated from the subject line of a spam email, which originated as a 19th-century slang term. That term, ‘cacklebladder,’ describes a prop used by 19th century grifters to fake their own death.

Drinks and light refreshments will be available on a voluntary donation basis.

Transit: the N and D will run express on Tue 8 Dec. Marian Spore is near the 36 St. stop on the N or D one express stop from Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn.

The first work in the Marian Spore collection is Andy Graydon’s Untitled (fault).

Untitled (fault) is based on sound recordings taken at a recent exhibition of 19th century photography at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The sound will be played on an acetate record, a pliable material usually used only for reference in the production of vinyl records. As the needle travels over its surface, it scratches into the acetate, gradually obliterating the original sound recording and replacing it with white noise. The marks and scratches made by the stylus as it travels over the surface of the disc form an indexical record of the object’s own exhibition history.

The original recordings will only be clearly audible during the first weeks of Marian Spore. The sound of the Met’s galleries, audiences, and ventilation systems will fill the space completely – although it will be nearly empty of objects.
