Joe Winter: Models for a History of Light
On 30 July, Joe Winter will reveal a new installation of his ongoing project at Marian Spore, ‘Models for a History of Light.’ For this work, Winter creates beautiful abstract photograms using ordinary construction paper exposed to light over long periods of time.
The piece is an ongoing series of experiments with light’s ability to both create and destroy images. Desk lamps, fluorescent tubes and LEDs are directed onto construction paper at very close range over long periods of time. The light gradually breaks down the pigment in the paper, resulting in delicate abstract compositions.
‘Finished’ compositions are removed from the apparatus and displayed on the gallery wall, gradually accumulating over time. These final works also continue to fade, transformed by the effects of ambient light in the exhibition space.
